3. An Elegant yet Simple spice rack with Wood and Brass.

Building Your Wood and Brass Built-in Spice Rack

Step 1: Building the Wood Box

Cut the plywood to size:

  • Back piece: 16″ x 30-3/4″
  • Side pieces: 30-3/4″ x 2-3/4″
  • Shelves and top/bottom: 14.5″ x 2-3/4″

Attach the sides and top/bottom pieces with glue and finish nails. Then, attach the back piece using glue and finish the nails.

Step 2: Drill Holes for Brass Rods

Decide where you want the posts and mark both sides of one board. Clamp the boards together and drill through several boards at once using a drill bit that accommodates the screws for the brass posts.

Step 3: Insert Shelves

Apply glue to the sides and back of each shelf and slide them into position. Use clamps to hold them in place and nail the sides to secure the shelves. Let the glue dry overnight.

Step 4: Add Veneer to Shelf Fronts

Cut a piece of veneer banding slightly longer than the shelf pieces. Use an iron to press the veneer in place, running the iron along it to activate the glue. Press a block of wood against the veneer to ensure a strong bond. File off the excess veneer and sand the edges lightly.

Step 5: Stain and Finish

Stain and finish the wood according to your preference. Use Rubio Monocoat or any wood stain followed by a clear coat for protection.

Step 6: Insert Shelf into Wall and Cover with MDF

Measure and cut a piece of MDF to cover the side wall. Cut an opening in the MDF to fit the spice rack, ensuring precise measurements. Rough-cut the hole using a jigsaw and then use a router with a bottom-bearing flush-trim bit for a clean cut. Sand and finish the MDF before installing it over the spice rack using finishing nails.

Step 7: Install Brass Rods

Cut the brass bars to length and slide two posts onto each bar. Insert the brass rods into the pre-drilled holes on the shelves.

Step 8: Fill and Label

Fill your spice jars with spices, add labels, and enjoy your finished wood and brass spice rack!
