10 DIY Sitting Projects for a Living Room

From the Eccentric to Esoteric, Ten Choices That Will Knock Your Socks Off (and Hopefully Not Your Butt)

A Floor Rocking Chair Project Idea

Oh boy, another DIY project. And this time, we’re making a rocking chair! I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend their afternoon cutting and sanding wood? Am I right? But don’t worry, folks, it’s not rocket science.

Just start by printing and cutting out some templates because who needs to wing it when you can have a piece of paper to tell you what to do? Then it’s time to remove your saws and cut those curves.

Don’t forget to sand everything because splinters in your butt are not a good look. Next up, you’ll be drilling some holes and attaching some rods, which is starting to sound a bit too much like a sci-fi movie for my liking. And voila, you’ve got yourself a rocking chair! Just add a cushion, and you’re good to go. I mean, sure, it might have taken you a few days, but at least you’ve got something to sit on now, right?

Technical Details:

Since it is a big piece, you should have four template pieces, three of which are glued together with tape. Once the template is ready, take a 1 x 12 board and trace the template on it, and repeat the steps to create another one. Then cut the lines using the saws.

  • Cut the ends where the board meets with a jig saw, and cut the curved section with a miter saw. Sand the pieces.
  • After that, decide which side will be facing out, then drill holes to attach the rods to the inside of the wood.
  • Next, attach the sections together.
  • Place the pieces on your workbench and glue the straight edges before screwing them.
  • The next step is inserting the dowel rods and middle cushion support into the rocker.
  • Seal the rocker and put a cushion on it.

A Modern Sofa with Storage Project Idea

So, you’re feeling handy and want to DIY a sofa with storage? Well, get ready to build some arm frames and make them look so square your neighbors will think they’re in a math classroom. Then, you’re gonna match those frames with two seat frames, attach them to the arms, and you’re almost done.

Next, it’s time to make the back frame, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll be tempted to just wing it and hope for the best.

But, please, measure carefully and nail it down like a true pro. Then, it’s drawer time! Don’t worry; it’s not like you’re playing a game of Operation; you just need to measure and build them carefully.

Lastly, throw on some scrap wood to make seating, add some cushions, and you’ll have a practical sofa and a great conversation starter. Just don’t be surprised when your friends ask you to make them one too!

Technical Details:

  • First, build the arms frames. Make sure they are square before attaching the wood cladding to the outsides of the frame.
  • Set aside the arms after adding some trimming.
  • Second, build the two matching seat frames.
  • Then attach them to the arms.
  • Third, make the back frame.

Next, place it inside the sofa and nail it down. Secure the backboard by nailing a 1×2 wood at the base.

  • Forth, take some boards and build the drawers. Measure carefully, so they fit the openings of the frame. Insert the drawers inside.
  • Fifth, nail scrap wood to the frame to make seating.
  • Last, place cushions on it.
