10 DIY Sitting Projects for a Living Room

From the Eccentric to Esoteric, Ten Choices That Will Knock Your Socks Off (and Hopefully Not Your Butt)

A Mid-Century Modern Armchair Project Idea

So, you want to make a chair from scratch? I don’t know about you, but the only thing I can make from scratch is a mess. But if you’re feeling ambitious, here’s what you’ll need to do. First, cut the wood for the legs, arms, and supporting parts.

Then, chisel out the corners, mark the spot for the holes and drill them with the help of dowel aids. Insert the dowels and add glue before attaching the dowel to the next piece of wood. From here, you’ve got yourself a frame!

Sand and varnish it, then set it aside. Next, take some foam blocks and fabric. Cut them to the size of the seating and back, cover them with the fabric you’ve sewn previously, and tuck them into the frame. Now, sit back and relax…in the brand-new chair that you just made from scratch!

Technical Details:

The first step is cutting the wood for the legs, arms, and supporting parts.

  • Cut a couple of each and several for the seating.
  • Then carefully chisel out the corners with a chisel.
  • Mark the spot where you will connect the wood, then drill the holes with the help of dowel aids.

When the holes are ready, insert the dowels in place.

  • Add glue before attaching the dowel to the next piece of wood.
  • Sand varnished the frame.
  • Put it aside. Now take some foam blocks and fabric.
  • Cut the blocks the size of the seating and back.

Then cover it with the fabric that you have sewn previously.
Last, tuck them into the frame.

A DIY Ladder Chair Project Idea

Hey, have you ever wanted a chair that doubles as a ladder? I mean, who doesn’t, right? It’s like the Swiss Army Knife of furniture. Here’s how you can make one yourself:

Start by making the front legs and attaching them with pocket screws. Don’t drill the holes too deep; you’ll drill into the pocket screw, and nobody wants that. Next, attach the legs and front rails and cut cleats for the front seat and step.

Add a piece of wood to the back of the step cleat for support. Cut and secure the front seat and step, and then make the back legs, top rails, and stiles.

Connect all the parts using piano hinges, sand the chair, and finish it with spray paint. Voila, you now have a chair-ladder combo. Just be careful not to get too comfortable and accidentally climb up to reach something high while sitting on it.

Technical Details:

First, make the front legs.

  • Cut the wood at an angle for the legs and rails.
  • After cutting them to size, attach them using a 1-1/2″ pocket screw.
  • Drill two pocket holes and ensure they do not drill into the pocket screw.
  • Then, attach it to the front leg.

Next, assemble the legs and the front rails.

  • After that, cut the cleats for the front step and front seat, then attach them to the legs.
  • Add a piece of wood to the back of the step cleat for support.
  • Then, cut and secure the front seat and front step.
  • Second, cut the wood and make the back legs, back top rails, and back stiles.

Next, attach all the parts.

  • The steps are similar to you make the front part.
  • Cut the wood to make the middle and bottom steps.
  • Assemble the pieces together.
  • Third, when you have assembled the front and back legs, it is time to connect them using piano hinges.
  • Sand the chair and finish it with spray paint.
