Redfern’s Jewel:

An Inside Look at Riley’s Terrace’s Innovative Design

Immerse yourself in the intricate details of “Riley’s Terrace,” a home that stands proudly in a row of six, radiating

an irresistible charm
that has been woven from the fabric of the family’s day-to-day lives, the unique features of the site, and the character of the surrounding Redfern neighborhood.
An Honest Expression of Living:

The design of Riley’s Terrace is a candid representation of how the family lives. This engaging home offers a direct connection to the outdoors, a crucial factor in the design. From the moment you step inside, your eyes are led from the front door, through the heart of the home, and right to the back door, anchored by the sight of a magnificent, sculptural tree centrally positioned in the space.

Designing with Innovation:

Crafting a home for oneself provides an opportunity to innovate. With the terrace being a mere three meters wide, it was crucial to ensure that circulation didn’t monopolize the space. A spiral staircase was implemented to minimize the spatial footprint while maximizing landing space.

Creating Flexible Spaces:

Flexibility was a key element in the design. Soft linen curtains in the sitting room allow for the area to be isolated or opened up, facilitating a flow from the kitchen to the sitting room. The kitchen houses a central island, doubling not just as a cooking space, but also as a dining room that sits adjacent to the courtyard.

Multi-use Extension:

At the rear, a new extension serves as a multifunctional space. It is a living area equipped with an entertainment unit, a TV, and a home studio – a perfect spot for those working from home.

Earthy Palette:

The material palette is intentionally simple, with an earthy concrete oxide floor connecting the terrace from front to back. Instead of cladding the structure, the raw materials, such as the stainless steel canopies, are celebrated.

Kitchen and Bathroom Details:

A simple matte Laminex product adorns the kitchen cabinets, benchtop, and splashback, blending with the plastered walls and giving way to a stunning golden spider marble benchtop. This material is mirrored in the master suite bathroom’s custom double sink, creating a visual and material link throughout the house.

Importance of Light:

Natural light is pivotal in the design of the house. The central positioning of the courtyard enables light to reach all areas of the terrace, particularly spaces like the dining room and kitchen that previously lacked natural illumination. The reimagining of the typical terrace layout has significantly elevated the family’s quality of life.

Above all, what truly sets Riley’s Terrace apart is the palpable sense of enhanced family life it fosters. The connection to the outdoors, the abundance of natural light, and the sheer livability have transformed everyday life into a joyous journey for the family fortunate enough to call this place home.
