Last summer Shaun was helping a friend move out of his farm house when he stumbled upon an old mirror in the attic. Knowing that I have a love for remaking old furniture, he immediately sent me a picture.
“Interested?” Absolutely! It actually ended up being Shaun’s friend’s wife’s grandmother’s.
It didn’t really fit the look the couple was going for in their new home, so I happily scooped it up.
And here it sat plainly in my bedroom for quite some time. I was torn on what to do with it. I thought about gold, but I worried it would just end up looking brassy and cheap.
I loved the look of a white mirror with a white wall like this one from Pinterest,
but I had a feeling it would just end up looking dull in my basic bedroom void of architectural features.
Eventually, I decided to do a pale silver.
I covered up the mirror with newspaper and painter’s tape and sanded it down
(the finish was peeling off in quite a few spots),
And sprayed it with a few even coats of white matte spray paint.
Once the paint was dry, I layered on light coats of silver acrylic paint (Martha Stewart’s line from Michael’s) with a rag.
It was quite therapeutic actually. With the rag I was able to leave a bit of the white peeking out along the ornate details… I didn’t think a flat silver color would suit the piece. I finished it off in a couple coats of the silver.
Again, here’s the before:
And the after (now that I’ve also updated the bedspread and added some art and a chair!).
Truthfully, at first I wasn’t entirely sold. You may even have seen bits of it here and there in previous photos because I was still deciding on the color.
It’s grown on me now, especially since I’ve thrown in a few more accessories in the room… I like that it has a similar look to the white on white, but with a little extra dimension thrown in.
It’s coming together! I’ll definitely need to tackle that expanse of white wall beside it next…
What do you think? Like the silver? Should it be darker? Or another color all together? I’d love to hear your opinion!
