12 IKEA DIY Ideas for Better Clutter Control

Welcome back, Simphome reader, and welcome back to IKEA!

A Turquoise Movable Kitchen Island Project Idea

If you want to add a kitchen island to your home but are worried about space limitations, consider a DIY project featuring an IKEA cabinet as the main material. Begin by measuring the dimensions of your kitchen and adjusting the island’s size to fit the available space, keeping in mind that a standard kitchen island should be between 36″ to 37″ high.

Once you have determined the appropriate size, it’s recommended to sand, prime, and apply 2-3 coats of paint to the cabinet before assembling it. Allow the paint to dry and cure for up to 5-7 days.

Once the cabinet is prepped, attach a plywood frame to the back panel to provide a decorative accent. Then, assemble the base cabinet according to the instructions provided. Turn the cabinet upside down and attach 4×4 posts to each corner as the legs, securing them with wood screws.

Add casters to the legs to make the island mobile, and attach a butcher block to the top side to serve as the countertop. Finally, install the doors, drawers, towel bars, and hardware on the cabinets. Give the countertop a final touch by applying an oil and wax conditioner to protect and maintain its finish.

With a little effort, you can transform your kitchen and add a functional and stylish island to your home.
