How much does building your own private backyard or garden area cost? Here’s how you can do this yourself.

You may have heard that installing privacy fences is difficult and expensive. This information is not always true. There are many ways to create your privacy fence with materials from around your home. You can start building one of these fences today! If you’re interested in DIY projects, you should also know that fences are the most popular DIY project.

Privacy fences can be made using different materials. The material you choose depends on several factors like the size, design, type, and location of your yard. There are several ways to build a privacy fence. However, we have listed three methods below that will work best for you. We recommend doing your research before starting so you don’t waste money.

Check your area’s laws

Before buying any fencing products, ask your local government for advice about what fences are allowed in your area. For example, if you live in an apartment complex, some cities require that you must build fences out of chain links. If there is no chain link, consider purchasing wooden privacy fencing instead.

Sketch your fence ideas

The first step in creating your privacy fence is to sketch out your idea on paper. Draw a layout of the entire fence, keeping in mind where you want the posts, railings, and gate to go. Then measure your property lines and mark your measurements on the paper.

Set up the boundary

Your next step is setting up your boundary to ensure that your fence won’t interfere with other structures, such as buildings, trees, or driveways. You’ll need to measure the distance between every object that would be affected by your fence, including walls, structures, and even tree branches, shrubs, and grass.

After you’ve completed all measurements:

  • Divide the total length of your fence into six equal pieces.
  • Mark each piece with a string.
  • Cut off the excess lengths.
  • Use another piece of string to connect each section.
  • Place the strings along your property line and adjust them until they’re straight.
  • Use the string to mark the exact location of each post hole.
  • Cut a hole at each point using a drill or hammer and chisel (a hammer and chisel work better). Make sure the hole is large enough for the post to fit through.

Prepare the post holes

Now that you have marked your post locations, it’s time to dig post holes. Dig two holes for each post and place the posts upright inside each hole. The tops of the posts should be level with the top of the ground. Fill the holes with concrete to ensure the posts stay firmly in place. After the concrete dries, fill the holes again with dirt.

Set up the fence posts

Next, use a power auger to drill four 5-inch diameter holes into each post 2 feet apart. Drive the fence posts into the holes. Fill the holes with concrete once more. Once the cement has hardened, remove the fence posts.

Set up the fence rails

Once the fence posts are in place, cut 4-foot sections of two-by-four lumber. Drill two 1/4-inch holes into each board spaced 3 inches apart. Use a jigsaw to cut slots into each board to attach the rails.
Fit the boards together so that you can see the slots. Attach the boards with screws driven from the bottom sides of the slotted ends. After that, insert the boards into the fence post holes so that they are flush with the interior of the post and the ground’s surface.

Fix the fence rails

Next, cut a piece of two-by-six lumber to serve as the gate. Drill two 1/4-inch holes into each end of the gate. Attach the gate to the fence rail with screws.

Finally, add decorative features to your fence. There’s nothing wrong with adding some fun details to your privacy fence. For inspiration, check out our list of ten fun privacy fence ideas to get you started.

To finish the look of your fence, you’ll need to buy some pickets. Pickets come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Choose pickets that suit your style. Some styles include square, round, decorative, and even flat metal.

Measure the space between your pickets. Use a carpenter’s pencil to draw horizontal lines across the space between each pair of pickets to find the perfect spacing for your fence. Measure each line using a tape measure from the bottom of one picket to the top of the following one.

When you’re satisfied with the spacing, cut each picket with a handsaw. To prevent splintering, use a sharp knife to trim each side of the picket. When the picket is trimmed, sand the edges smoothly.

Give the wood time to dry.

Once you’ve finished cutting the pickets to the desired size, give them a few days to dry completely. Afterward, paint the pickets using spray paint.

Complete the fence

Finally, attach your pickets to the fence rails and gate. Before attaching the pickets, clean the surface to remove any debris. Coat the pickets with a stain sealant or varnish to protect your fence.
