Step #1 – Determine your bean bag chair’s diameter
The first step is to find out your bean bag chair’s diameter based on how wide you want it to be. Whether you find comfort in an extra-large sized bean bag chair or want a normal sized one for your kids – the choice is all yours. Generally, a regular sized bean bag chair is about 32 inches wide, a large sized is about 42 inches wide, and an extra-large one will be around 56-70 inches wide. So, choose the diameter based on your requirements and move to the next step.
Step #2 – Finalize the fabric size
Once you have understood how wide your bean bag chair needs to be, add about 4-5 inches more to the width, and finalize the fabric size. Doing this is necessary to get more room to create the cover with ease.
Step #3 – Get the fabric
With a smorgasbord of fabric variety available on the market, you are certainly spoilt for choices when it comes to picking the right material for your bean bag cover. More often than not, the cotton-polyester blended material becomes the preferred choice of many DIY lovers. Perhaps, that’s because it is easy to maintain and comfortable as well. No matter what your choice of fabric is, make sure that it goes well with your home décor and complement other furniture items that are there in your home. For this reason, you must consider the design and color before buying the fabric.
Step #4 – Arrange all the other things that you’ll need
Once you have got the fabric, arrange the following essentials to let your creativity flourish with a DIY beanbag cover.
• Matching sewing thread
• Dressmaking pins
• Sewing machine
• Pair of scissors
• Ruler or measuring tape
• Pencil
• Steam iron
Step #5 – Cut the fabric
Now using the pencil, mark the fabric in the exact measurements you want to cut it in. To do this, first measure the fabric with the ruler or the measuring tape and then make marks with the pencil. Once done, cut it using a pair of scissors.
Step #6 – Iron the fabric
After you have cut the fabric, iron it to make sure that it is free of wrinkles. To ensure that the material of the fabric doesn’t get damaged while ironing, place a towel on top of it before you iron it.
Step #7 – Sew it
Here comes the most essential part of sewing your DIY bean bag cover. Begin by taking a few sewing pins and stick them to combine the two pieces of fabric. This will ensure that the fabric pieces stay in place when you sew them. Then, take your sewing machine out and put one of the edges beneath the sewing machine’s needle. Keep an inseam of at least 1/2 inch over the sides. Reposition the fabric when you reach the corners of the fabric pieces and continue to stitch. Alternatively, you can also make a diagonal stitch.
As you are about to stitch the entire fabric, stop at about 4 inches from the starting point to create a pocket to fill in the pellets.
Step #8 – Invert the fabric
Finally, after stitching, with the help of your thumb and pointer finger pull the fabric out from the pocket, you created in the above step. And that’s it. There you have created your very own bean bag cover in less than ten steps! All that’s left is to fill in the pellets and close the pocket by sewing it by hand, and your bean bag will be ready.
