How to Build a Batting Cage for Your Backyard

Practice makes perfect. However, going to the batting cage facilities in your area can add up quickly. While a few dollars for 15 or so pitches isn't very much, 15 pitches goes by very quickly and you can easily spend $10, $20, or more every time you go.

Practicing as often as possible is really key to improving skills but most people can’t afford to go to the batting cages or bring their kids every day. Nevermind the time it takes out of your schedule to go to and from the facility.

That’s where having a batting cage in your own backyard can really help to get that necessary practice time in. With the help of a pitching machine, you or your children can spend hours practicing without having to pay for every 15 pitches.

Building your own batting cage doesn’t have to be difficult, though. Using Kee Klamp fittings and pipe, along with a large cargo net, you can assemble a batting cage in a few hours or less. Best of all, since Kee Klamp fittings use a set screw to secure to pipe (vs. traditional pipe that uses threaded fittings), the batting cage can be dissembled and reassembled.

In this guide, we’ll cover two different customers who each built their own batting cage using Kee Klamp fittings and pipe. We’ll discuss the details of each project and the fittings you’ll need to build your own.

Paul’s Backyard Batting Cage

This DIY batting cage was built by Paul from Hampstead, Maryland as a present for his youngest son’s 15th birthday. The cage is 55 ft. long and features a metal frame built using pipe and Kee Klamp fittings.

The pipe and fittings have been painted black, and Paul even laid down some astroturf. The structure uses a large net placed over the frame to complete the cage.

Paul has been very satisfied with the result and appreciates how sturdy the structure is:

Bryan’s DIY Batting Cage

This batting cage was built by Bryan from Baytown, Texas. Bryan’s design differs from Paul’s by using two main uprights at each end rather than three spread out evenly. The two uprights feature a triangular design to provide stability to the structure.

The batting cage uses the following fittings:

 

Just like Paul’s design, however, the entire structure can be dissembled. This is made possible due to the unique design of Kee Klamp fittings.

Rather than using a threaded connection, Kee Klamp fittings slide over pipe and secure in place by tightening down a set screw. This connection type allows for some adjustability but it also enables owners to relatively easily disassemble and reassemble any structure built with these fittings.
