Whether you’re a minimalist, a hoarder, or somewhere in-between, well-planned built-in wardrobes will take your bedroom to new levels of zen.

When it comes to bringing bedroom setup ideas to life, most people jump to styling a plush new bed, and forget about important functional elements of the bedroom, like wardrobes. No longer just an afterthought, built-in wardrobes now come with so many options to keep your belongings organised, easily accessible, out of site or beautifully displayed.

With new wardrobe technology, materials, functionality, and the choice of pre-fabricated or custom-made built-in wardrobes, your options will only be limited by your imagination (and your budget!). Here are some ideas and tips for built-in wardrobe design and organisational tricks to help create your dream bedroom with built-in robes.

Thinking about where the new built-in robes should go? Consider the space between the bed and the wardrobe. If space is tight, opt for sliding doors to ensure it’s easy to move around the room when accessing the wardrobe.

The key to good built-in wardrobes is maximising available space by choosing a combination of hanging rods, shelving units and drawers to suit your storage needs. Everything should have its place and be easily accessible.

Custom built bedroom wardrobes

If you have the budget for it, take your built-in robes to the next level and have custom built-in wardrobes designed and installed. While costs may vary based on your requirements, materials and installation costs, generally custom designed and built wardrobes start at about $2,000.

It might sound like a hefty price tag, but custom built-in wardrobes will improve the organisation and functionality of the bedroom, and can even increase the value of your home, should you decide to sell.

Got high ceilings? Lucky, you! Make the most of that extra space with high cabinetry and pull-down wardrobe rails to hang more clothes within easy reach.

Also try to include lighting in your built-in wardrobes design to make it easier to find things, and help with getting ready. Opt for strip lighting or LED down lighting so that the lights don’t get too hot, and have them automatically turn on when the wardrobe doors are opened.

3 ideas for organising bedroom cupboards

  1. Got wardrobe shelving? Pop your belongings into baskets or boxes to keep things organised and hide mess.
  2. Ditch those plastic or wire hangers and replace them with timber or velvet hangers. Your wardrobe will look like a beautiful boutique, and the shoulders of your clothes won’t get those weird pointy edges.

  3. Get even more storage out of your wardrobe by adding hooks to the inside doors to hang belts and necklaces, and towel rails for hanging scarves.
