DIY Plastic Bottle Bird Feeder

DIY bird feeder made out of recycled objects.

In order to create an eco-friendly recycled bird feeder out of a plastic bottle and some old wooden spoons you will need all the following materials:

• a two liter plastic bottle
• bird seeds
• 2 wooden spoons
• utility knife
• scissors
• tape
• string
• paper funnel

Safety note: be cautious when using the utility knife and scissors to cut through the plastic.

Start off by drawing a horizontal line with the dry erase marker on the lower side of the bottle (as shown in image). Flip the bottle and repeat on the other side (as shown in image).

Now using the utility knife, carefully cut on the horizontal lines. You should have two horizontal openings as shown in image.

Now, insert one of the wooden spoon to make sure the spoon will fit through the openings that were just made. On the side with the head of the spoon, draw a stretched out upside down “U” from corner to corner (as shown in image). Cut where the dry erase marker is drawn. This will allow the bird food to come down and sit on the head of the spoon.

Repeat entire step #2 but an inch above the first spoon in in opposite direction. Draw horizontal line with dry erase marker on one side (as shown in image). Flip the bottle and repeat on the other side (as shown in image).

Now using the utility knife, carefully cut on the horizontal lines. You should have two more horizontal openings as shown in image. This time, you do not have to insert the wooden spoon, just draw a stretched out upside down “U” from corner to corner like previous step (as shown in image). Cut where the dry erase marker is drawn. Insert wooden spoon after you have made the cuts, it should look like this (as shown in image).

Now that you have both wooden spoons inserted in the plastic bottle, it is time to tie the string onto the cap of the bottle in order to hang it from a tree. Draw a small line (as shown in image) on the cap of the bottle with a dry erase marker. Using the utility knife, carefully cut the line drawn. Now insert the string (as shown in image). Pull it through and make a small knot (as shown in image).

Now the plastic bottle is ready to be filled with bird seeds. Before beginning to fill the bottle, take out the wooden spoons. Tape the openings. This will prevent the bird seeds from falling out (as shown in image).

Now uncap the bottle and using a funnel (in this case we made a funnel out of paper by rolling it up. Pour in bird seeds (as shown in image) and fill it up halfway.

Once the bottle is filled up halfway, cap the bottle and flip over (as shown in image). Remove the tape from all the openings (as shown in image).

Insert both wooden spoons back into the horizontal openings (as shown in image). Flip back over to original standing point (as shown in image).

Upcap the bottle and finish filling it up with the birds seeds. When finished it should look like this (as shown in image).

Finally, tie the other end of the string to a tree and let it hang for birds to enjoy (as shown in image).
