Take your bedroom from 'boring' to 'wow' with a splash of paint, warm lighting and luxurious textures. Even on the tightest budget, there are plenty of design tips and tricks that can transform your bedroom into a place you would be proud to show off.
Looking to give your bedroom a budget-friendly makeover? Soak&Sleep's in-house bedroom expert, James Montgomery-Castle, has unveiled his top tips for revamping tired-looking bedrooms without breaking the bank.
1. Lick of paint
Refresh your bedroom walls with a lick of paint. Easy to complete over a weekend, paint provides a quick and purse-friendly solution to updating a tired space.
Need some interior inspiration? James explains: 'Our top tip would be to focus on one wall for a show-stopping focal point in the room, rather than trying to cover every wall and ceiling. With a tin of paint costing less than £30, you can easily update a bedroom to make it the haven you deserve!'
2. Invest in new bedsheets
Instantly refresh your bedroom with gorgeous new bedsheets — or a throw. For a hotel-worthy feel, opt for crisp white cotton with a navy piping edge. For a statement, play around with punchy prints and vibrant textures. As well as elevating your space, fresh linen can help you to sleep soundly, too.
3. Declutter
Cleaning and organising your house are excellent de-stressors, with previous research finding that getting rid of dust, mould and other nasties can improve the air quality. Spring cleaning season is right around the corner, so now is the perfect time to slip on your rubber gloves and give your bedroom a good declutter.
HB tip... Starting with one small drawer rather than the whole wardrobe, for example, will stop you feeling overwhelmed. Creating a schedule can help prioritise tasks and make sure procrastination doesn't set in.
4. Vinyl wrap furniture
Give life to your old furniture with a touch of vinyl wrap. 'Sweeping the nation in the latest Insta trend, we've seen DIYers picking up vinyl to update their old bedroom furniture,' says James. 'With vinyl coming in at just £20 for a roll on Amazon, you can breathe in new life to your old chest of drawers or bedside tables in no time!'
5. Knit yourself a chunky blanket
With previous research finding that knitting can dramatically lower heart rate and blood pressure, now is the perfect time to pick up your knitting needles and make your very own chunky blanket. It might take a little knowhow, but it does earn its keep by offering so many advantages. Why not give it a go?
6. Fill your space with plants
From small succulents to Insta-worthy hanging plants, fresh foliage is a great way to breathe new life into your bedroom. For some of the best air purifying plants, opt for the Snake Plant or Spider Plant. If you're struggling to sleep, add calming Jasmine, Lavender and Aloe Vera into your space.
7. Frame your favourite memories
Proudly display your favourite photos and memories by placing frames around your room. 'Print out some of your favourite memories (free through some apps!) and find some cheap frames to give you some happy times to see from your bed,' James suggests.
HB recommends... If you have the wall space, why not consider experimenting with a gallery wall? It's a curated display of photographs, posters or prints, and it's a great way to add some character to your space.
8. Get your hands on a new duvet and pillow
According to The National Sleep Foundation, you should replace your pillow every year or two as they 'absorb body oil, dead skin cells, and hair'. To help you sleep better — and reduce any aches — get your hands on a new pillow or duvet. Your bedroom will be a haven of wellbeing in no time...
9. Lights
Brighten up your bedroom with fairy lights, wall-hung sconces or hanging festoon styles. A cosy way to transform your space, the right lights can breathe new life into your boudoir. James explains: 'Changing the lightbulb can make a massive difference to your bedroom. Pick warm, soft white lightbulbs to emit a relaxing yellow hue.'
10. Create a cosy corner
'Use curtains or voiles to corner off parts of your bedroom – with many in the UK using bedrooms as workspaces during the day, "draw" a line under the working day by closing the curtains on your desk,' says James.
'Many have said they find it hard to switch off after work at the moment, a physical barrier between work and home could be the answer to your problems. Curtains also don't have to hide anything – get a luxury hotel feel with transparent curtains surrounding your bed with a canopy style draping!'
