What is Resin?

Natural resins are organic liquid substances that are secreted from various plants. They are transparent or translucent and are a yellowish brown colour. In modern industry, natural resins have been almost completely replaced by synthetic resins which have some of the same physical properties that natural resins have, but they are chemically different. They are used to make many products today and it is hard to tell the difference between resin and plastic. While resin is similar to a plant-based substance, plastic, on the other hand, is made from petroleum chemicals.

Resin Sheds

Resin shed is just another name to use when referring to a plastic or vinyl shed. Resin sheds are the newest type of garden shed and they are becoming quite popular for specific purposes.

Best Uses For Resin Sheds

Hotter Climates: Resin sheds are a great option for warmer climate areas where insects are a problem. The plastic material makes them resistant to the damaging effects of insects.

Humid Climates: Resin sheds are also a good option for people living in really humid or wet climates as the material is highly resistant to moisture. They will not rust like a metal shed will and they are less susceptible to mold or mildew than a wooden shed.

Portability: If you are planning on relocating your shed multiple times, then one made from resin is a great choice as it is much lighter and easier to move than a wooden or metal shed.

What Resin Sheds Are Not Good For

Extra Accommodation: If you are wanting to use your shed as a temporary granny flat or for additional accommodation for visiting friends or relatives, a resin shed is probably not your best option. A wooden shed offers a much more pleasing place for overnight guests and can be insulated for chillier evenings.

Hanging Storage: If you would like to have lots of extra shelving for storage installed on the walls of your shed, then a resin shed is probably not your best choice as the walls cannot support a large amount of excess weight.

The Pros of Resin Sheds

Low Maintenance: Resin sheds are almost maintenance free. They can usually be cleaned using a low-pressure garden hose (higher pressure cleaners can damage the surface) and a soft bristle brush. If the surface still isn’t clean, you can use water mixed with mild detergents. Make sure you thoroughly rinse the panels when you are finished.

Durability: Even though resin sheds are relatively light, they are really highly durable. Their sturdy material will not crack easily. They are also UV protected so they will not fade; you will not have to paint them.

Inexpensive: If you are on a budget, you will find that resin sheds are quite reasonably priced. You could purchase a smaller one for as little as $300. A larger one can run anywhere from $700 to $5,000 or more depending on the size and if you choose to add accessories.

The Cons of Resin Sheds

Can Become Stained: Resin sheds can become stained by oil, ink, grease, tar, or other household chemicals. Make sure you remove the stains with a synthetic turpentine oil or another mineral spirit.

Can’t Support Heavy Hanging Objects: Even though resin sheds are highly durable, they cannot bear as much weight hanging from the walls as a wooden shed can. If you need to hang heavier items on your walls, then you may be better investing in a wooden shed.

Limited Choice of Colors: With a resin shed, you are limited to the small assortment of colors that the manufacturer offers. Furthermore, resin sheds cannot be painted, stained, or shingled to match the color of your home exactly. If you like the versatility of being able to change the color of your shed after a few years, then a wooden shed would be a better option for you.

Limited Customization: Resin sheds come in pre-determined sizes and styles. There is very limited or no room for customization. Some kits may come with the choice of purchasing an expansion kit to give you more size options, or additions such as skylights, windows, lighting, shelving, and peg strips, but that is about as far as you can go with customization. If you would like a truly unique design, then you probably should look at a wooden shed.
