If you've decided to take on a redecorating project during this COVID-19 lockdown, then this new project could be a satisfying and rewarding one. City homes are usually riddled with small spaces and compact living. But it doesn't need to be a congested and uncomfortable space. Here are some tricks to maximise space in a tiny bedroom.

Consider Light Coloured Walls

Since soft shades reflect light, paint the walls in light colours. This will make your bedroom look bigger and airier. Avoid dark coloured wall paint as it absorbs light and makes the room seem more compact.

Tip: You can choose a wallpaper that has horizontal or vertical stripes as this can create the illusion of width or height.

Choose Muted Flooring

Opt for marble, vitrified tiles or porcelain tiles in neutral colours to add an element of brightness within the bedroom. Avoid materials like laminated wooden flooring and carpet tiles as these materials impart a visually heavy look.

Create an Efficient Layout

Create an efficient bedroom layout where the position of the bed ensures good overall circulation space to move around. Also, less furniture or multifunctional pieces that serve a dual-purpose are ideal for the bedrom.

Add Built-in Storage

Introduce built-in storage within a small bedroom as it won't take too much floor space. The different types of built-in storage within the bedroom includes built-in shelves, headboards with built-in storage, box beds, hydraulic beds, a window seat with storage and so on. These pieces of furniture occupy a smaller footprint and give the bedroom a larger look.

Introduce Mirrors

Install mirrors within a small bedroom as that they can reflect natural and artificial light around the room to give the illusion of a larger space. Take advantage of the natural light by strategically placing the mirror opposite the window or any other artificial light source.

Hang Ceiling-to-Floor Curtains

Install ceiling-to-floor curtains as they can make a space seem taller. Avoid using heavy drapes and go for curtains in cotton or linen materials that match with the wall paint. If there is a space constraint then install blinds which are sleek in appearance.

Keep the Bedding Simple

Do not use bold and heavy patterns for the bedspread, pillows, and throw cushions as they make a small bedroom feel smaller and claustrophobic. For a clean and simple look, introduce light coloured fabrics for the bedding that matches the colour scheme of the bedroom too.

Colour-Coordinate the Room

Minimise contrast and avoid using too many colours within a small bedroom. This can be achieved by opting for a single colour scheme where different shades of the same colours are used in the bedroom. They not only add an element of openness but efficiently weave the space together.

Install Floating Shelves

Save on the floor space by going vertical. Introduce open shelves displaying books and paint the shelves in the same colour as the wall paint.

De-clutter

An organised, clutter-free and minimalist bedroom looks visually bigger than what it actually is. Make it a habit to de-clutter and organise your wardrobes or closets regularly otherwise the bedroom will feel overcrowded. Remove extra pieces of furniture from the room and do not crowd the walls with too many photographs or paintings.
