Small Space Solution: The Murphy Bed/Desk

Since this room is currently being turned into a nursery, I thought I would share how our home office/guest room has looked for the last year. Living in Santa Monica where space is limited, we only have two bedrooms. Since I work from home, we wanted our second bedroom to function mainly as a home-office, however, we did not want to give up the comforts of a guest room for when we do have friends and family stay over. Therefore, my husband and father-in-law designed and built this Murphy Bed-Desk! Once they created it, I took over the decorating of the room.

Here you can see how the desk lays flat on the ground when the bed is down.

Look how much more room there is when the bed is up! We really get much more use out of this room with the Murphy-Bed desk. Considering the number of times guests actually stay over, it is great to be able to utilize the extra space with the bed stored against the wall.

Since this was a fairly involved project, I won't go into full detail. But here are some of the basic steps of how this came together.

First my husband and father-in-law built a tray to hold the queen mattress:

Then attached elastic straps to hold the mattress in the tray when the bed is pulled down:

They next built a frame and mounted it to the wall. The mattress tray will fit within this frame:

The mattress tray was mounted to the frame with large 3/4" bolts to support the weight. My husband installed gas springs to safely assist the person lifting the bed:

Measure twice, cut once! The mattress tray fits perfectly in the frame:

They mounted Ikea end tables on the bottom of the mattress tray as a decorative finish. The legs of the end tables are not used at this point, but will be used later in the process. They got the idea of using the Ikea end tables from ModdiDayPeople.com. However, the rest of the bed design was their own, especially in adding the desk.

Pictured is the backs of the end tables as they are ready to be anchored to the tray using molly bolts. They also threaded pull ropes between the decorative tables to the tray which you pull on to lower the bed.

For the desk, my husband designed the mechanics of the leg supports so that the desk would lay flat on the ground and you would not have to clear it off to use the bed!

He used a table top from Ikea sized slightly narrower than the mattress so the legs of the tray would straddle the desk. Here you can see the table legs lay flat on the ground but at an inward angle so it tucks in beneath the bed-frame and legs. He designed the kinematics of the supports so the desk always stays parallel to the ground.

He made the legs and had the custom screw mounts welded at the proper angle:

These turnbuckles hold the desk up when in place:

He then added gas dampers so the desk gracefully lowers itself to the ground. You can place a full glass of wine on the surface and let go of the desk without spilling a drop:

The legs that came with the Ikea end tables serve as the bed legs and snap on when we put the bed down:

Here is a video of how the desk collapses to the ground:

As a final touch, we built some quick custom shelves between the frame and the adjacent wall to make better use of the space.

  3. This is the most beautiful Murphy bed I have seen (& I've seen a few trying to come up with ideas for our basement)! I would love if you & your husband put together some plans to share or even for purchase. I took a look at the moddi bed but there are a lot of reviews that say there are fundamental flaws with the bed.

  8. I would like to know where you bought that rug? It looks like the dash and Albert one I want, but I've seen reviews about it that say the white part looks pink when you get it home. Yours looks true white and gray. What an awesome job on the whole room! I'm very impressed.

    1. Thank you Anna! The rug is actually a plain white rug from Ikea which I ended up painting. I will do a post on the rug soon. It took a lot of experimenting! It ended up looking great, but is really not the softest. Look out for a post soon! Thank you for your comment!

  12. Wow! So awesome! I've been scouring the internet for weeks looking for just the right Murphy bed for our spare room. I'd be willing to buy the specs/materials list if you have them. My hubby is great at this stuff, but we have 2 little boys and taking the time to reinvent the wheel is NOT on our priority list. Really beautiful.

  19. Beautiful space! I would love to install a Murphy bed in our home office, but we would need the bed to be very low profile along the wall, as to not impede on the small size of our office, when the bed was not in use. Do you know the depth of the bed from the wall, when the bed is not in use? It looks to be fairly thin. I appreciate any insight!

  20. Do you have more specific plans? I'm somewhat handy but can't weld but would love to build this if I had specific parts list and more detailed instructions. I like the desk idea and that I'd probably save hundreds over a murphy bed purchase.

  21. Hello,

I love your Murphy Bed design; it would work so well with our little cottage.

I have one question: can the bed be stowed fully made up--perhaps not with the pillows--so that if used every day, the bed can just be pulled down and slept in, and not have to be made up each time it is used?

    Thank you!

  22. I've been looking for a murphy bed like this for the grandkids! I do have one question~ what type of bold was used to attach the bed to the wall frame? I see the gas springs....free moving bolt maybe?

    Brilliant!! I can do this!!

  23. Hey! So are you ever going to put the plans up? I absolutely LOVE this DIY and it seems fairly simple-- however there are really no instructions and some of them are specialty pieces which leaves me playing the guessing game! I am terrible at that game!! LOL

    My questions are as followed:

-I am also confused on the fact that you have gas springs + Gas Dampers. which one is for the bed & which is for the desk
-What are the Dimensions for the wall frame? It looks to be pretty shallow & Not bulky around 12" wide ( WHICH I LOVE)
-If we were to have the legs welded & specially crafted-- What would we tell the person doing it-- bc showing them a picture really makes me sound like a complete Novice..

Thank you so much & I hope you respond.. I am purchasing my first home for my son & I and we are in the process of closing. He is having a really hard time adjusting to the move bc we were in the same apartment for the last 8 year of his life, and right now we are living with my MOTHER ( SOS!!) He is Ticked off!! So I really want to build this for him & have it put in his room as a surprise!! You know to offset his irritation with the move! lol

Msmarniece@LaLaBoudoir.com If you care to respond! Thank you so much..

  24. A few years later and I am wondering if you ever managed to put some plans together. I have been looking at many options but always come back to this one! What size bex is that? How much depth is the overall frame and hoe much wall anchoring used?
    Thanks!

  25. My dad has ALS and he sleeps in a hospital bed. I've been sleeping on the floor during the night, but this would be amazing. How much did this cost to build without the idea tables attached to the front?

    1. Hi Casey. It really only cost a few hundred dollars to put together. You just need to have the time to put it together. Unfortunately we have not had the time to put some plans together as we have two small babies. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you!
