I am super excited about posting this project today because I feel like it has been so long since I last posted a DIY project. This Mid Century Style Kitchen Hutch Makeover is a pretty special project because it was one of my all-time fave pieces of furniture with how it ended up turning out. It was pretty spectacular. So much so that I could have sold it 10 times over with the amount of interest I got on it when I posted if for sale. While giving it a makeover wasn't super technical to do it just took a little time with sanding and prepping the wood, painting the different areas on the hutch and adding the stain. You could say it was a labour of love but the end result speaks for itself. Let me talk you through the process  

First, let's talk about the materials & tools I used throughout the project. Click on the links to take you to where I purchased certain items for this kitchen hutch such as the knobs and handles.

• Ziplok Bags

• 120 grit sandpaper

• 240 grit sandpaper

• Masking Tape

• Old Newspaper

• Zinsser Smart Prime

• Taubmans Sheffield Grey

• Dulux Casper White

• Cabots Brazilian Roast Interior Stain

• Fiddes & Sons Wax – Rugger Brown

1.    Deconstruct & Preparation: Take the old fixtures off the hutch doors and drawers along with the hinges and screws off the doors. Set the hinges and screws aside in Ziploc bags to put the doors back on later. Give the entire hutch, including the doors and drawers, a light sand with 120 grit sandpaper in preparation for painting. Sand the benchtop of the hutch back to bare wood using the Orbital sander with 120 grit sandpaper. Brush the entire hutch with a brush to remove any sanding dust. 

2.    Undercoat & Paint: Cover the sanded benchtop with newspaper and tape in place.  Apply a coat of Ziessner Stainblocker Undercoat over the entire hutch using the Wegner Fine Spray. Once dried apply a coat of Taubmans Sheffield Grey over the hutch excluding the inside of the upper and lower shelves, leaving it to dry for two hours before applying the second coat. Let this dry before taping off the hutch leaving the shelving open to paint. Apply two coats of Dulux Casper White to the inside of the shelves with the paint sprayer leaving it to dry between coats.

3.    Stain & Finish: Remove the newspaper from the entire hutch and using a damp cloth wipe over the bare benchtop in preparation for staining. Apply a coat of Cabot Brazilian Roast Interior Stain and leaving it on for 3-5 minutes to soak in before wiping off with a clean, soft cloth. Let this dry for 2 hours before applying the second coat leaving for slightly longer to darken to your desired result. Wipe off and let dry overnight. Using a clean, soft cloth apply a coat of Rugger Brown Fiddes & Sons Wax over the entire top of the stained bench top. Leave for 5 minutes before buffing with a clean, soft cloth.

4.    Reassemble: Carefully add the doors and drawers back onto the hutch before attaching the Prestige 25mm Metallic Gold Hampton Knob to the drawer fronts and the Prestige 64mm Metallic Gold Hampton Cup Pull Handle to the cupboard doors. 

Do you love it? I was so happy with how it turned out. I initially was going to keep it for myself but found the spot I had for it really didn’t suit how big it was plus I felt like it made the room it was in slightly darker. That being said when I sold this Kitchen Hutch it was so popular I could of sold it 10 times over. So if you want to do a piece of furniture up and want it to sell well try a variation on this colour scheme.
