Operation "Spice Shelves", officially successful. Over and out.

(previously, on "Tidbits from the Tremaynes")

I don't know man. . . should I really put spice shelves into the wall??
Like, INTO the wall?
Yes?

Yes.

Yes?

Yes.

Too late now, sucka.

"OH CRAP there's wiring in this wall!"

"Don't worry, it's only phone wire. Those only sorta shock you. No biggie."

I am so not serious.

And now. . .the continuation. . .

So, I lived with two large holes in my wall for the space of 24 hours, aprés which I received a text:

"Present for you in the gay-rage. Merry Christmas."

Except my dad doesn't call my gay-rage the "gay-rage", only I do. But the rest is true. I went to investigate my present:

And here they are. Custom shelves to fit perfectly (ahem, after cutting more drywall away, and then some more, and a little teeny bit more, wedging the phone wire back further, and hammering in here and there) into the wall.

Aren't they fabulous? The backing was some old v-groove paneling I had laying around, left over from this project:

And here those awesome shelves are in the wall:

I'm liking this already, man! Added some nails from the handy dandy nail gun to keep these in place, and began adding my trim.

Now, clearly I would be trimming around and between the boxes to clean up "the look". The Daddy-o said:

"You need some small-ish fluting."

And so he made me some:

Isn't that fabulous? I don't even want to think about how many pass-throughs with the saw it took to make that. I'd have wet my pants by the end.

So I added my custom pieces of fluting, and a choice piece of molding across the top, as seen in Exhibit A:

And then came the piece de resistance:

the shelf.
This shelf has rounded edges since my kids like to bang their heads on anything that protrudes. The corners are also extra rounded for minimal noggin damage. And someone, who-must-not-be-named, had their pants on fire and couldn't wait to start putting spices in, even when it wasn't painted.

It showboats fabulous dentil molding, made, again, by the Daddy-o,

as well as my favorite trim. Which is now all over my house.

(Like here)

(and here)

(and here)

(and 5 billion other places).

But I digress.

After a thousand-hundred coats of paint, this bad boy is done.

And holy crap balls. I totally love it.

And you know what? The hubs came home from a business trip with no prior knowledge to this little projét, walked past, and said, and I quote:

"I really like this."

SCORE.

Tracy's Trinkets and Treasures said...

I am wondering where you got the cute jars too. Your daddy and you did good. I am like the husband, "I really like it too".

Lori @ In Pursuit of It All said...

You annoy me, woman.

Because not only are the spice shelves adorable, but the little jars with the labels are also adorable.

I have a spice drawer.

By which I mean, I have a drawer, and anything that falls into the "spice category" (which, you'll be interested to know, also includes leftover soy sauce and mustard packets from Chinese take-out) gets stuffed in it.

Dude, I bet your husband is afraid to leave the house. He probably talks about all these projects you do while he is away and his boss thinks he's just trying to get out of going on business trips ;)

It looks ridiculously beautiful Mandi! I love how organized it is and how you keep sneaking molding into every part of your home *lol*

Mandi! I love it! Two comments:

1. I always assume you say "gay-rage" like "gay rahhhhj". But then it occurred to me that you might say "gay rage" and then I started picturing some really irritated drag queens. Either way, I love it.

2. "Crap balls". LOL.

I'm a new reader and these shelves are so awesome they are ri-damn-diculous! If I had the wall space (and the cajones) I would stalk a carpenter to make me some! And how cute are those cutout letters?! Where are they from?

Anonymous said...

I love the shelves, but I REALLY want your dad!

Kate (Little Beach Bum) said...

Wow, just wow. LOVE those shelves! The whole look is amazing - love those jars, also!! And - between this, your indoor (outdoor) lamp and seeing your dad's projects, I'm totally blown away by all the home improvement skills on display here. This is kind of making me feel like I need to get my butt down to Home Depot and take a class on using an electric drill, or a table saw, or something... LOL!

Amazing work!! You're so lucky to have a handy dad. :) I love the containers you used for your spices. Your risk paid off! Visiting from The Nesting Place! :)

OMG lady that is ballsy and it turned out awesome!! It has so much character with the molding, I Love it.

stormyyskyy said...

So I agree with anon that it is off center, but you aren't Martha Stewart. Although it would be cute (& even) if the spoon was vertical & next to the "T". Just saying. (Don't give me a third nipple, please.)

Dixiejet said...

Where, oh WHERE did you get he little jars ?!?!?! I'm gonna get the Hubs to make one for me but I need info ! GRIN.....absolutely love it..

Mandi@TidbitsfromtheTremaynes said...

I'm sorry Dixiejet I would totally answer you back personally if I could but I can find an email/link! I used jars from hobby lobby. When they're 50% off they're not bad at all!

Ms Do"mess"ticated said...

This is so awesome. I was thinking of doing something like this under my kitchen cupboards, but now I'm thinking make a wall of it...that's even better...couple questions - if you don't mind...

Where did you get the molding that is all over your house? I think I need some in mine? And Can you tell me what the measurements are between the shelves? and what the measurements are for one cabinet side to side and top to bottom?

I ADORE built-ins! Love these shelves! But my favorite detail?...is the cute vintage/distressed labels on the jars! Maybe I'm crazy, but I think they really add extra character! I'm envisioning a similar set of shelves in my own kitchen....hmmmmmm....

Unknown said...

Wow, I'd also like to know from whence that beautiful decorative trim at the bottom of Your Rack originated! Because—in all seriousness—I bought something incredibly similar in the 1 1/2 foot range that Urban Outfitters deemed a "shelf" at about $30 a piece! Gimmie the good word, Sistah!

Unknown said...

Wow nice! How about that if I adjust these with Wall gondola rack ?
