29 Best Bedroom DIY Ideas and Projects

I’m particularly obsessed with bedroom improvements at the moment (constantly craving that perfect night’s sleep!) so I’ve popped together 29 of the best bedroom DIY ideas and projects… perhaps you can bookmark a few for the weekend?

29 Best Bedroom DIY Ideas and Projects

29 Best Bedroom DIY Ideas and Projects

1. Book Planters

Book Planter DIY

Book Planter DIY

For the little book worms out there these gorgeous book planters will look divine on your beside table.

2.  Map Flowers

facnypantsweddings

Even though these are technically a wedding DIY, a garland of these map flowers would look beautiful strung along a bed head.

3. Ikea Hack Mini Drawers

solebitch

I bloody love an Ikea hack and this one is rad. Perfect to store your make up or trinkets on your dressing table.

4. Cut Out Work Art

papermaman

Even though word art has been done to death in recent years I can feel a little resurgence coming on… love this DIY from The Paper Mama.

5. Cinder Block Bedside Table

A perfect lesson in how to not make cinder block furniture look cheap and tacky.

6. Washi Tape Picture Frames

desgingspongewash

Perfect for renters. Stick your favourite photos to the wall with Washi tape frames and then peel it off when you move out.

7. DIY Dotty Wallpaper

pikkupikkup

I absolutely ADORE this wallpaper DIY. It’s literally little black stickers stuck to the wall. Brilliant.

8. Sharpie Wallpaper

vintagerevivals

This is another wallpaper DIY but this one is done with Sharpies. Some people are so clever, it’s almost irritating.

9. Gemstone Mirror Frame

designlovefest

I think we all got sick of birthstone decor in the 90s but I stumbled upon this little ‘gem’ (snort!) and I thought it was quite a gorgeous little bedroom project.

10. Crochet Poufs

pickles

I may be delusional but these almost look achievable right?

11. Marbled Trinkets

designmom

I just loved this nail polish marble DIY – Something tells me there will be a lot of marbling going on this weekend.

12. Adult Hama Bead Mobile

mariesfabrik

I have BUCKETS of Hama beads hiding in my craft cupboard and I’m so stoked to finally have a way to use them.

13. Wool Patchwork Cat

purlbee

I’m a sucker for homemade toys and this little guy would look pretty cosy on almost any bed.

14. Washi Tape Vases

acreativemine

A super cheap and easy way to up-cycle old bottles and jars for your bedroom.

15. Cardboard Bedroom Silhouettes

whimsylove

How amazing are these furniture silhouettes? Perfect if you aren’t planning on staying in the same spot for too long.

16. Hanging String Table

monsterscircus

Such a brilliant and simple idea for space saving. Hang a circular chopping board next to your bed as a bedside table.

17. Bed Head Art

woonideenheadboard

A simple and temporary head board. Perfect for people who like to change their mind a lot.

18. Ikea Hack Malm Drawers

woonideen

I own about three Malm sets of drawers and I’m definitely giving one of them a makeover soon.

19. Leather and Wood Organiser

designspongeleather

I need one of these near my door to stop the avalanche of mail. It’s on my to-list.

20. Hanging Notepad

designspongebranch

Mr Smaggle and I sometimes have morning ‘stand up’ meetings where we talk about what we’re going to do that day and this would be perfect for stand up note taking.

21. Hand Painted Cushions

fabricpaperglue

Mr Smags is very funny about cushions for some reason but I think he’d quite like if I made a few of these.

22. Gold Acrylic Clipboards

designsponge

I’m an absolute glutton for stationary and rather than spend a bajillion dollars at Kiki K, I’m quite fond of an office bedroom DIY.

23. Painted Dresser

camillestyles

Love this painted dresser. Furniture is usually so bland so why not jazz it up with snazzy paint job?

24. Handwriting Statement Wall

beautiful mess

How beautiful to have a wall with your own handwriting on it? If we ever did this in the Smaggle House it would have to be Mr Smags handwriting. Mine is shocking.

25. Tote Bag Cushion Covers

notcot

How annoyed are you that you never thought of this yourself? I’d probably cut the handles off and sew them up (control freak) but they look quite cute as it.

26. Type Felt Rug

jessicahische

I love a good rug and this would look amazing underneath a glass top table.

27. String Pendant Lamp

madebygirl

This is literally made from string and glue. So cheap and so awesome.

28. Copper Clothes Hanger

loveaestheticscoatrack

A brilliant solution if you have open cupboard spaces.

29. Ikea Hack Beside Table

sugarandcloth

Just pop a few table feet on a single Expedit square. Awesome.

Who’s totally keen to haul ass to the hardware store and spend a week’s pay on varnish and gold leaf?

Which projects are you putting on your DIY to-do list?

P.S. This post has been updated with some 2017 goodness!

Love the tote bags as throw pillows. We are in the midst of neutralising our house in order to sell it, so this is something liveable I could do. Some other crafty stuff I love if someone else makes it. I just do not have the patience and then I can only see fault in things if I make them….

I know! How clever was that? I can do basic stuff and quick stuff. If it takes too long and the end result is crap I get really pissed off.

I’ve been wanting to update my bedside tables FOREVER, because they’re ugly plain pine. Those Ikea hack tables are amazing!! I keep undies and such in my bedside drawers so I’d probably throw them all in a cube and shove it in there. I’m SO excited to do this on the weekend now!!!!!!!!!!!! (ok, deep breath)

I thought that was adorable too! And not even technically a DIY!

No. 25 – the tote bags as cushion covers. I bought a cute tote bag from Shop Handmade in Canberra. It says “Canberra. What A Lovely Place (Despite What Everyone Says)”. I didn’t want to use it as a shopping bag because it would get all grotty so my mum turned it into a cushion cover. I can’t figure out how to post a photo of it though…

I have the same thing! My mate bought me a tea-towel that says ‘I’d go to zone 2 for you’ and I want to do something with it rather than let it get all grubby used.

  5. That IKEA hack side table is so simple yet so genius. Love it!

I am so craft challenged that I can only look at things like this and wish! The hanging bedside table looks a bit dangerous though. I can imagine waking up groggy and fumbling for something only to have everything crash to the floor!

I guess if it’s high enough it wouldn’t be a problem… yeah nah it’s totally dangerous.

So many DIY, so little time!

Although, I did the make your own flower thing for my wedding bouquets (which looked amazing if I do say so myself). Those map flower things take freaking AGES!!!!

They totally do. I had to help a bride do this once and it was mental. Never again.

  13. Kelly 9 years ago

So… I have tried a few of these things already. The nail polish marbling isn’t quite as easy as it looks but that might also because I wanted to make a massive print. There is no starting with the little things for me! Typo have the best totes for cushions and I too cut the handles off.
