Contact us before your pet becomes a coyote’s next meal! Coyote deterrents were once hard to find, but with the invention of Coyote Rollers and some smart fence work, we can help keep your pets and family safe. As communities grow and infringe on the natural habitat of coyotes, coyotes have become embolden enough to snatch your furry friend right from the end of the leash! In some cases, we have experienced a pack of coyotes wipe out an entire neighborhood of pets. Coyotes can easily hurdle a 5’ high fence, and scale or climb a 6’ fence within seconds. A coyote jumps over your wall or fence in two phases (see the banner picture above). First, the coyote jumps to grab hold of the top of the fence or wall with its front paws to give it a boost in velocity. The coyote simultaneously uses his back paws to spring off the fence in preparation for a landing right in your yard! Coyote Rollers make the jump much more difficult because they interfere with the coyote’s attempt to secure its paws on the top of the fence. The coyote rollers only need 4 oz. of pressure to get them spinning and repel that darn predator right back on its hiney! Let’s be clear – nothing is 100% guaranteed. There’s too many variables when it comes to wild animals – especially cunning, smart animals that work together better than our politicians ever could! (Though politicians might actually be more cunning predators than coyotes!) What is a Coyote Roller? Coyote Rollers are made by Roll Guard Inc. and are 4’ aluminum rollers with a horizontal rib design. They are weatherproof and work in hot temperatures as well as cold. There are various brackets available to mount coyote rollers to chain link fences, wrought iron fences, wood fencing, vinyl privacy fences and even block walls. When installed properly, the Coyote Roller will spin freely on the brackets. The Coyote Rollers can be cut to length and re-capped to secure even the steps in your fencing. Coyote rollers can be installed with their original aluminum finish, or can be powder coated to match the color of your existing fencing. We recommend you keep your walls and fences clear of vines and climbing plants that may eventually interfere with the spin of the rollers. In addition, since coyotes love to lurk in the shadowy underbrush, we recommend you keep the immediate area around you fences clear of thick brush, plants, and tree limbs that might be used to climb over your fence. Coyote Fencing Tips Since coyotes are incredible athletes, they not only can climber and hurdle fences, they can also dig right under, or tear apart your chicken wire fence. So here are out suggestions: We recommend installing at least a 6’ high fence. If it’s a chain link fence, we recommend using smaller mesh wire – say 1 ¼”which is considered non-climbable for humans (typical chain link is 2” mesh). The gauge of the wire should be no less than 11 gauge. Remember, the smaller the gauge, the thicker the wire. Vinyl privacy fence is also a great alternative because of the smooth surface, as is chain link fencing with pre-woven slats. If you have an existing fence that is under 5’ tall, ask your Norwalk Fence Contractor about increasing the height of your fence. In most cases, it is very doable without replacing the entire fence. The Coyote Rollers are then installed to the top of your fence. Sometimes our clients like to install a 45 degree section of fence or wire outwards from the top of the fence, and then install the coyote rollers on the edge of that cantilever section. A galvanized steel cloth should be installed at the bottom of the fence and buried 12”-18’ deep to prevent the coyotes from digging under the fence. All gates should be self-closing. It would be tragic if you spent your money on Coyote Fencing only to have someone leave a gate open and the coyote slinks in and nabs your pet. This has happened already to one of our clients. There should be no gaps larger than two inches in your fence and gates. Protect Your Pet From Coyotes Remember, this is YOUR yard and YOUR pet. You know your property and your pet’s habits better than we. Never leave your pet unattended at dawn dusk and at night. Keep your yard well-lit and thick shrubs and trees away from your fence line where coyotes can hide. Don’t leave food and water outside as an invitation for a hungry coyote. Coyotes are PREDATORS! Coyotes and Cats If you have an outside cat and no trees in the yard, we recommend installing a cat post. A cat posts should be a thick wood post at least 8’ tall with carpet or thick twine wrapped around the post. There should be a deck or “tree house” at the top where the cat can hide from the coyotes. We also recommend installing escape tunnels in your yard. Escape tunnels should be at least 6’ in length and can be made of steel or thick pvc material. The tube should be about 12” diameter to prevent your cat from getting stuck, but also to prevent a coyote from climbing in after your cat. Secure the cat escape tunnel in place with heavy bricks at both ends. Then train your cat to enter the tunnel with food or treats so your cat becomes familiar with his hideaway. Coyote Rollers Keep Dogs In Maybe your problem isn’t coyotes. Maybe your problem is you have a dog who’s watched too many Houdini movies with you and your dog has become an escape artist extraordinaire! Coyote rollers can not only keep coyotes out, but keep your dog in. Please let your Norwalk Fence Contractor know exactly how your dog is escaping. A video would help immensely!
